Spring Clean Up

Dethatching

Jimmy's Fond du Lac lawn care can take care of built up thatch in your lawn. Thatch is dead grass, grass stems, and roots which accumulate as grass plants die and are replaced. It is caused by the woody, stems, rhizomes, and stolons below the grass blades. Excessive thatch happens when the lawn is fertilized too often, the grass clippings are too long, or there isn't enough microorganisms to digest the thatch present.

Heavy thatch in the lawn tends to have a shallow root system. This makes it hard to maintain the grass. Thatch can prevent water, air and other nutrients from entering the roots. Lawns with thatch are more likely to have problems with diseases.

Dethatching is the process of removing these dead stems that build up underneath lawn grass. It can be done with either a rake or a mechanical dethatcher. Once the thatch is pulled up from the surface, it should be raked up and composted or dipsosed of.

We use the mechanical type to dethatch.

Aeration

Lawn Aeration

Aerating is the process of using a mechanical core or plug aerator to pull up a core of soil and leave it on the surface. These holes allow for air, rain, and nutrients to penetrate the soil better. It also gives the roots room to grow. The soil cores left on the surface will dissolve over a few weeks. The soil in the cores contains microorganisms that help digest thatch naturally, creating a healthier lawn. Your lawn will have the following benefits:
